What is Ashtakavarga?

Ashtakavarga is one of the most quietly useful tools in Vedic astrology, and one of the least known. The name comes from the Sanskrit ashta (eight) and varga (division or group), referring to the eight sources of strength that contribute to each planet's score: the 7 visible planets (Sun through Saturn) plus the Ascendant (Lagna).

While most astrological analysis focuses on where planets are placed and what aspects they form, Ashtakavarga answers a different question entirely: how strong is each sign in your chart? It gives every sign in your chart a numerical strength score, showing where planetary energy flows easily for you and where it takes more effort.

This system was codified in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), the foundational text of Vedic astrology, and practicing Jyotishis have used it for centuries to sharpen their transit and dasha analysis.

How It Works

The Ashtakavarga calculation proceeds in a systematic, rule-based manner:

  1. For each of the 7 planets, an individual Ashtakavarga table (called a Bhinnashtakavarga) is computed.
  2. Each of the 8 sources (7 planets + Ascendant) "votes" on each of the 12 signs based on classical rules defined in the BPHS. These rules consider the source's position relative to each sign.
  3. A benefic point (bindu) is awarded if the placement is favorable according to the classical rule set. Each sign can receive between 0 and 8 bindus per planet.
  4. The individual tables are then combined into the Sarvashtakavarga (total strength map) by summing the bindus across all 7 planets for each sign.

The result is a clear numerical picture: some signs in your chart carry strong support (high bindus), others less (low bindus). It's a helpful lens on why some areas of your life tend to flow more easily than their house placement alone would suggest, and why others ask more of you.

Reading the Chart

The Sarvashtakavarga total for each sign provides an at-a-glance strength assessment:

28+
Strong House

A well-supported zone. Indicators here traditionally lean favorable, with less friction.

25–28
Average House

Mixed indicators. How this zone expresses tends to depend on the specific planet and its condition.

Below 25
Challenging House

A zone that traditionally asks more of you. Progress here tends to take extra patience and effort.

The maximum possible Sarvashtakavarga total across all 12 houses is 337 bindus. Most charts fall in the range of 300–340. The spread across houses matters more than the total: an uneven spread shows clearly where life flows easily for you and where it asks for more.

Sarvashtakavarga: The Complete Picture

The Sarvashtakavarga is the aggregated strength map created by combining all seven individual planetary Ashtakavarga tables. It shows the total benefic strength of each of the 12 signs in your chart, considering the contributions of every planet simultaneously.

Think of it as a heat map of your chart: some signs glow with accumulated support from multiple planets, while others remain relatively dim. This map is especially useful for:

  • Transit timing When a slow mover like Saturn or Jupiter crosses a high-bindu sign, that stretch traditionally leans productive. Crossing a low-bindu sign, the same transit tends to bring more friction and testing.
  • House strength comparison Even when two houses both hold benefic planets, classical practice reads the one with more Ashtakavarga bindus as the steadier, better-supported of the two.
  • Dasha refinement A Dasha lord's Ashtakavarga strength in its sign helps you read whether that period leans toward the planet's easier or more demanding expression.

Practical Application

Ashtakavarga transforms abstract chart interpretation into something closer to quantified analysis. Here are two practical examples:

Saturn Transit Analysis

Saturn takes approximately 2.5 years to transit each sign. If Saturn is currently transiting a sign with 30+ bindus in your Sarvashtakavarga, tradition reads the period as one of productive discipline: steady effort that tends to show real progress. If it transits a sign with fewer than 25 bindus, the same transit traditionally brings more friction: obstacles, delays, and tests of patience.

Dasha Period Strength

When a planet's Mahadasha begins, check that planet's individual Ashtakavarga score in the sign it occupies. A Mahadasha ruler with 5+ bindus in its own Bhinnashtakavarga for that sign traditionally expresses its supportive side more easily. With 3 or fewer bindus, the planet's energy is weaker, and its period may bring the more challenging significations of that planet.

Why This is Seeker-Tier

Ashtakavarga is not a simple lookup. It requires computing 7 individual planetary tables (each with contributions from 8 sources across 12 signs), then aggregating them into the Sarvashtakavarga. Historically, this computation was performed by hand over the course of hours by experienced astrologers working with tables and charts.

DashaFlow computes your complete Ashtakavarga, all 7 Bhinnashtakavarga tables plus the Sarvashtakavarga, instantly, directly from your Swiss Ephemeris-calculated planetary positions. The result is presented as an interactive strength visualization that makes the numbers immediately meaningful.

Because of the computational depth and the interpretive sophistication required, Ashtakavarga analysis is part of the Seeker tier, designed for those ready to go beyond the basics and understand the counted-out foundations of their chart.
