What is a Janma Kundali?

A birth chart maps the exact positions of all 9 Vedic planets at the moment of birth. Called Janma Kundali ( जन्म कुंडली) in Sanskrit, it captures the sky as a frozen snapshot, a celestial fingerprint unique to that exact moment and place.

The Vedic birth chart includes Rahu and Ketu (the lunar nodes, treated as full shadow planets), uses the sidereal zodiac aligned to the actual constellations, and places the Moon's position as primary, since the Moon sign and its nakshatra shape your emotional nature, your Vimshottari Dasha starting planet, and much of the chart's interpretive framework.

The Kundali is not a prediction. It is a map: it shows the sky's condition at the moment a life begins, and through it a trained Jyotishi reads tendencies, strengths, and karmic themes.

The 12 Bhavas (Houses)

Each house in the birth chart governs a specific domain of life. The Sanskrit term Bhava means "state of being" or "condition." In the whole sign house system used by DashaFlow, each house corresponds to one complete sign of the zodiac, starting from the Ascendant sign.

1st — Tanu Bhava

Self, physical body, personality, and overall vitality. The foundation of the entire chart.

2nd — Dhana Bhava

Wealth, speech, family values, and early childhood. What you accumulate and how you communicate.

3rd — Sahaja Bhava

Siblings, courage, short journeys, communication skills, and artistic expression.

4th — Sukha Bhava

Home, mother, emotional peace, property, vehicles, and inner contentment.

5th — Putra Bhava

Children, intelligence, creativity, romance, past-life merit (Purva Punya), and speculative gains.

6th — Ripu Bhava

Enemies, disease, debts, obstacles, and service. The house of daily struggle and eventual overcoming.

7th — Kalatra Bhava

Marriage, partnerships, business relationships, and how you relate to others one-on-one.

8th — Ayur Bhava

Longevity, transformation, hidden knowledge, inheritance, and the mysteries of life and death.

9th — Dharma Bhava

Fortune, father, higher learning, philosophy, long-distance travel, and spiritual seeking.

10th — Karma Bhava

Career, public status, reputation, authority, and your most visible actions in the world.

11th — Labha Bhava

Gains, aspirations, social networks, elder siblings, and the fulfillment of desires.

12th — Vyaya Bhava

Loss, expenditure, foreign lands, isolation, spiritual liberation (Moksha), and the unseen realms.

The 9 Grahas (Planets)

In Vedic astrology, the nine Grahas are more than astronomical bodies. The word Graha means "that which seizes or influences." Each planet carries a distinct energy that colors the houses it occupies and the signs it rules.

Sun (Surya)

The soul (Atma), authority, father, government, vitality, and self-confidence. Rules Simha (Leo).

Moon (Chandra)

The mind (Manas), emotions, mother, nurturing, public image, and inner peace. Rules Karka (Cancer).

Mars (Mangal)

Energy, courage, property, siblings, aggression, and the warrior spirit. Rules Mesha (Aries) and Vrischika (Scorpio).

Mercury (Budha)

Intellect, commerce, communication, adaptability, and youthful energy. Rules Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo).

Jupiter (Guru)

Wisdom, expansion, dharma, teachers, children, and spiritual growth. Rules Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces).

Venus (Shukra)

Love, beauty, luxury, art, relationships, and material comfort. Rules Vrishabha (Taurus) and Tula (Libra).

Saturn (Shani)

Discipline, karma, structure, longevity, delays, and hard-won mastery. Rules Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius).

Rahu (North Node)

Obsession, ambition, unconventional paths, foreign influences, and insatiable worldly desire. A shadow planet (Chhaya Graha).

Ketu (South Node)

Liberation, spirituality, past-life mastery, detachment, and mystical insight. The other shadow planet, always opposite Rahu.

The 12 Rashis (Zodiac Signs)

The sidereal zodiac divides the ecliptic into 12 equal segments of 30 degrees each. In Vedic astrology, these signs are called Rashis. Each Rashi has a ruling planet that governs its qualities and expression.

Why Precision Matters

DashaFlow uses the Swiss Ephemeris, the gold standard of astronomical computation, to determine planetary positions with sub-arcsecond accuracy. The Lahiri ayanamsa, the official standard of the Indian government, is applied to derive precise sidereal positions. The whole sign house system is used, consistent with the classical Parashari tradition.

Why does this level of precision matter? Because even a few minutes' difference in birth time can change the Moon's nakshatra. And the Moon's nakshatra determines the starting planet of the entire Vimshottari Dasha sequence. A shifted starting point moves every planetary period of the timeline. The difference between Moon at 29°59' Cancer (Ashlesha nakshatra, Mercury dasha) and 0°01' Leo (Magha nakshatra, Ketu dasha) is just two arc-minutes, yet it produces a completely different dasha calendar.

That is why careful, high-precision calculation matters so much here.

Classical tradition treats the birth chart as a map of karma: a record of the patterns a life brings in, and the tendencies that may unfold from them. A theme from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
